1988

December 31, 1988

To conclude a year when we shared a townhome (with Janine Creekmore), went on a golf trip to Orlando, attended some concerts -- including a memorable John Mellencamp show at Riverbend -- and played a million rounds of golf, I was Silk's best man when he tied the knot on New Year's Eve.

He had been my best friend since high school, when in eighth grade he moved to Franklin from Cleveland and I moved there from Springboro.

Four years later, it would be my turn to get married, and he would be my best man.

Well, it took two times to get it right. But by taking the right study course and prioritizing the study time over all the social events, I made it with plenty of room the spare. So on a Monday in the middle of May I made the trip with Mom and Dad to the Ohio Theater in Columbus to take my oath.

Though it seemed like Dad had been an attorney forever, I was astonished to think he was only in his 20th year. He had enjoyed so much success in a relatively short amount of time.

My only hope was that I would find my niche, the same way he had.
