And I thought my night was tough. I hit a ball deep to shortstop in the Warren County Bar Association's softball game at the Armory in Lebanon. I busted my butt to beat out the throw to first. I was safe, but the first baseman tripped me, and I went tumbling headfirst to the ground. My right hand absorbed most of the blow, meaning not only was I unable to play the rest of the night, but I was unable to move my right arm for more than a month.

But that same evening, events were unfolding in Chautauqua, near Carlisle, that would create litigation I would be involved in few three years. Chris Key was one of a group of 14-year-olds who gathered on the front porch of a home to have fun and joke around. Gasoline was spilled, and a cigarette lighter was lit. Chris was the victim. He died a few hours later at Miami Valley Hospital.

We should never feel sorry for ourselves. Someone always has it worse.
