July 30, 1999

So Heatherwoode G.C. tells me the greens fees can be lower for our Legacy Golf Outing if we play it in July as opposed to, say, September. Turns out Ohio is a lot warmer in August than it is in the fall, and some people (who are these weirdos) don't like to play golf in an inferno.

I say okay, we'll do that. So July 30, 1996 was the date for our fourth annual event. How hot could it be?

Really, really hot. By the 14th hole Heatherwoode turned on all the sprinklers, even in the middle of the fairways, and our golfers went out of their way to get IN the way, not avoid it. I think the actual temperature was 102, but it felt like 115 or worse.

But it was still a great day. Here, I'm playing with my neighbor Mike King, my pastor Charlie McMahan, and a neighbor/fellow church-goer Darrel Bender.

I'm not sure, I think Charlie's next sermon was about the fires of hell. It was a personal account. "I Just Came Back From There."

November 25, 1999

It started as a passing though, the night before Thanksgiving in 1975, when we were high school sophomores. "Hey, let's meet at Schenck tomorrow afternoon and we'll play a little football," Griff said. Since we didn't have basketball practice on Thanksgiving, we all were free. So we played football for a couple of hours in what was known as "The Turkey Bowl," which seemed pretty creative to a bunch of high school kids.

And now, on this date, we assembled once again for the twenty-fifth time in a row. How was that possible?

In 1979, our game moved to the Franklin Pee Wee fields, and pretty soon we used socks in our pocket to re-create the flag football experience we all had enjoyed at Miami-Middletown. A few years after that, MUM gave us the flags -- so we were really in business.

We met every year, 9 a.m. There was no need to call anyone to remind them.

We didn't wear these jerseys. I contacted Franklin athletic director Marc Sands, who was one of our coaches when were in high school, and he let me borrow some jerseys so we could take this photo, which was used when a story about us was written for the Dayton Daily News.

Ready? Set?

Okay, where is the Ben-Gay?
